The album “Music of Shadows” was being created by Ivan Grebenschikov during several years, from 2018 to 2021. These compositions, originally created as sound illustrations for Diana Tunyova's shadow theater, combine elements of ethnic music, ambient and free jazz improvisation.
Ivan's search for his own style has led him to unusual instrumentation: from analog Soviet synthesizers and electric pianos to organ, kalimba, gusli, block flute, whistle and ocarina. There is much less piano here, unlike the previous works. It creates a new space for experimentation and bold sound solutions.
On several tracks Ivan is accompanied by Igor Mozgalyov on bass (1,4,8,10) and by Arkady Pikunov on saxophone (4). Also you can hear Diana Tunyova's vocals (3).
“Music of Shadows” is an original combination of electronics, ethnics and free jazz, a melodic and meditative soundtrack to the world of shadows coming alive in every sound and rhythm.
